Amanda Nunes Targets History As UFC’s First Three-Division Champ

By Eddie Sanchez

UFC Hall of Famer and two-division champ Amanda Nunes is setting her sights on becoming the first three-division champion in UFC history.

Her ambition comes immediately after the co-main event of UFC 322, where Valentina Shevchenko defended the flyweight title by defeating former strawweight champion Zhang Weili. Nunes is the only woman to have held UFC titles in two different weight classes simultaneously (bantamweight and featherweight).

Nunes is reportedly preparing for a return to face current UFC bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison, which would bring her out of her 2023 retirement. She stepped into the octagon at UFC 316 for a faceoff with Harrison after the new champion submitted Julianna Peña to claim the belt. That title fight is the immediate priority, but Nunes is also eyeing the long term, which could include a drop to 125 pounds to challenge for the flyweight title.

This matchup would reunite Amanda Nunes with her longtime rival, Valentina Shevchenko. Nunes holds two victories over Shevchenko, including their bantamweight title fight at UFC 215 in 2017, where she retained her belt by a controversial split decision. A move to flyweight would give Nunes the chance to become the first three-division champion in UFC history. After Shevchenko’s latest win, Nunes responded to Dana White’s post to make her intentions clear.
