UFC 295 Took a Major Hit

The conclusion of the 2023 calendar year has delivered more twists and turns than even the most ardent UFC fans could have expected. UFC Heavyweight Champion, Jon Jones, was forced to pull from his upcoming fight with Stipe Miocic. To make matters worse, Miocic will no longer be on the card to fight a replacement.

In a shocking announcement, Dana White revealed that the newly-crowned UFC Heavyweight champion, Jon Jones, had been dealt a severe blow in his training camp. A torn pectoral muscle, sustained while preparing for his eagerly anticipated clash with Stipe Miocic at UFC 295, has left fight fans disheartened. This colossal event, initially set to electrify the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 11, 2023, is less captivating in star-power for the common-MMA fan.

With the unfortunate cancellation of this much-anticipated showdown, the MMA world braces for a seismic shift in the fight card. Sergei Pavlovich (#2) and Tom Aspinall (#4) are stepping into the limelight, squaring off for an interim title in the co-main event of UFC 295.

To add another layer of intrigue, the original co-main event between Jiri Prochazka and Alex Pereira, set to vie for the vacant Light Heavyweight title, has now ascended to headline the card.

For Jones, this setback comes at a time when the world was eager to see him cement his status as the supreme Heavyweight champion. His electric return to the octagon in March 2023, ending a three-year hiatus, was nothing short of spectacular. A jaw-dropping first-round guillotine choke dispatched Ciryl Gane to earn the championship in his heavyweight debut.

Now fans face the prospect of waiting a minimum of eight months before Jones can return to the UFC. It’s a period of uncertainty, as fight fans wonder if Jones will indeed return to the sport.

Meanwhile, as the stage is reset, Tom Aspinall has been on his own journey of recovery, bouncing back from a debilitating ACL. In July 2023, he made an emphatic statement by securing a dazzling first-round technical knockout against Marcin Tybura. Sergei Pavlovich, on the other hand, has been on a tear, with his most recent knockout victory over Curtis Blaydes coming just over three minutes into the first round of their scintillating encounter in April 2023. Pavlovich enters the fight for the interim title on the heels of an six-fight knockout winning streak.
