By Eddie Sanchez
According to TJ Dillashaw’s management, the former Bantamweight Champion has informed the UFC of his retirement from MMA.
Dillashaw (17-5) reportedly decided to retire after learning that his recent shoulder surgery will sideline him much longer than originally expected. The 36-year-old entered his UFC 280 title fight with bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling compromised and further injured his shoulder while he was dominated and finished in Round 2.
The former two-time champion has a complicated legacy with the organization. Along with his defeats to Dominick Cruz and Henry Cejudo, Dillashaw is most know for his two knockout victories against Cody Garbrandt. The first of which earned him his title for a second time, and the second of which led to a failed drug test.
Following a second failed drug test against Cejudo, Dillashaw completed a two-year long suspension. Dillashaw retires with a (1-1) record during his return to the sport.
Here is what some of his contemporaries had to say about his retirement.
