Swan Song for a Legend

By Eddie Sanchez

Glover Teixeira’s bout with Father Time has officially ended. The 43-year-old UFC legend, and former Light Heavyweight Champion, announced his retirement following his defeat to Jamahal Hill. Glover ends his mixed martial arts career with a record of 33-9, including a 1-3 recording in UFC title fights.

Of course, his victory against Jan Blachowicz in 2021 was the crowning jewel of his career. Glover became the second oldest champion in UFC history, and fans and media alike were happy for the man who has equally embodied professionalism and grit.

Glover Teixeira is as respected as they come in the sport. He has always maneuvered as the adult in the room and has taken on all challenges. His resume is littered with a who’s who of champions and fan favorites, including Jon Jones, Ryan Bader, Quentin ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson, and Rashad Evans, which doesn’t even include the list of current top-ten fighters he has faced. Glover’s career has spanned across two-to-three distinct eras of the Light Heavyweight division, and UFC fans will surely miss his fighting spirit.

Jan Blachowicz, the man who lost his belt to Glover Teixeira in 2021 issued one last friendly challenge to the legend. Whether this was sent as a serious request or not remains to be seen, but the respect and admiration could never be questioned.

Shoutout to Glover Teixeira! He will always be remembered as a UFC Champion, legend, and role model to others in the fight game.
