Sebastian Fundora, Errol Spence Jr. set October fight

By Eddie Sanchez

Sebastian Fundora and Errol Spence Jr. have reached an agreement for a WBC junior middleweight title fight in October in Dallas, sources revealed to ESPN.

PBC aims to host the Prime Video PPV event at AT&T Stadium, contingent on the finalized date aligning with the Dallas Cowboys’ home schedule. Spence, 34, has previously fought there twice, securing victories against Mikey Garcia and Yordenis Ugas.

Following Fundora’s surprising victory over Tim Tszyu in a bloody match in March to claim the title, Spence entered the ring and issued a challenge, stating, “It’s time to get it on. He has a pretty good height, but we’ll see. We’ll break him down like we always do.”

Fundora stands out with his remarkable height for a 154-pounder, being 6-foot-5½ with an 80-inch reach. The 26-year-old won his first title following his only defeat, a seventh-round KO loss to Brian Mendoza in one of 2023’s biggest upsets.
A year later, Fundora (21-1-1, 14 KOs) is ranked as ESPN’s top junior middleweight after stepping in for the injured Keith Thurman on 11 days’ notice and outlasting Tszyu.

Nicknamed “The Towering Inferno,” Fundora and his sister Gabriela have made history as the first brother and sister duo to become full-fledged champions in boxing.

Spence, on the other hand, will be making his debut at 154 pounds after a ninth-round TKO loss to Terence Crawford in July for the undisputed welterweight championship.

He recently ended his long-term association with trainer Derrick James, who had been with him since his amateur career that led to a stint at the 2012 Olympics. Spence and James are currently involved in a legal dispute over financial disagreements.

POTENTIAL FOR A REMATCH:

With Terence Crawford set to fight Israil Madrimov on August 3, he will have a chance to earn the WBA and WBO Junior Middleweight titles. If he is successful, he will have a watchul eye on the Spence vs Fundora matchup.

If Spence is also victorious, all of a sudden the two rivals will hold three of the belts within the division, I’d imagine Jermell Charlo would also be stripped of The Ring Magazine belt in this instance.

Spence has made some suggestions that this next fight might be his last, but if he is willing and able to attempt to avenge his loss to Crawford, and Canelo proves to not be an option for Crawford, then this would be a huge opportunity to extend their legacies and earn serious cash.
