Ryan Garcia vs Mario Barrios Deal Close for 2026
By Eddie Sanchez
It appears Ryan Garcia will once again attempt to capture his first professional boxing world title, with Mike Coppinger of The Ring reporting that Garcia is nearing a deal to face WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios in the first quarter of 2026.
Garcia (24-2, 20 KOs) has achieved tremendous success in building his brand and social media following, but his accomplishments in the ring haven’t matched his fame. His most notable win, against Devin Haney in April 2024, was later overturned following a failed drug test. In his most recent outing, Garcia looked disinterested and sluggish in a disappointing upset loss to Rolly Romero.
Still, the 27-year-old remains a marketable name, and Barrios (29-2-2, 18 KOs) is in need of a high-profile opponent. Barrios fought to a draw with a 46-year-old Manny Pacquiao in his last fight, following another draw against fringe contender Abel Ramos. By the time he meets Garcia, there’s a chance neither fighter will have recorded a win in nearly two years, yet a major world title will be on the line.
It’s an intriguing matchup on paper: Garcia clearly has the flashier skills, though he’s only truly delivered in one marquee fight—one that no longer officially counts. Barrios, meanwhile, has struggled to look like a legitimate top-10 welterweight in his last 24 rounds.
If both fighters show up at their best, this could be a genuinely competitive fight. But given their recent performances, it’s hard to know which version of Ryan Garcia or Mario Barrios we’ll actually see.
