One-Month Away: Jon Jones vs Stipe Miocic
By Eddie Sanchez
Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic are set to finally meet in their highly anticipated rematch at UFC 309 on November 16, marking a year since their initial UFC heavyweight title bout was postponed. Jones, widely regarded as one of the greatest light heavyweights in mixed martial arts history, moved up to the heavyweight division and claimed the vacant title by defeating Ciryl Gane in March 2023. Meanwhile, Miocic, known for holding the record for the most UFC heavyweight title defenses, last fought in March 2021 when he lost the title to Francis Ngannou.
Originally scheduled for UFC 295 at Madison Square Garden in November 2023, the matchup was delayed after Jones withdrew due to injury. Now, UFC 309 presents the opportunity for Jones and Miocic to finally settle their score, potentially in what could be a retirement fight for both fighters.
In the co-main event, a five-round lightweight rematch between Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler adds further excitement to the card. Oliveira previously claimed the vacant lightweight title with a second-round TKO victory over Chandler at UFC 262 in May 2021. Chandler’s absence from competition since then, largely due to awaiting a scheduled bout with Conor McGregor that ultimately did not materialize, makes his return to the octagon highly anticipated.
Retirement Rumor:
Jon Jones confirmed on “Clocked N’ Loaded” that his upcoming fight against Stipe Miocic is likely to be his final appearance in the octagon.
“It’s going to be the last time,” Jones said after UFC 306 in Las Vegas. “More than likely.”
Rumors of a potential double retirement have swirled since the original announcement of Jones vs. Miocic for UFC 295 in November of last year. The fight was delayed for a year after Jones suffered an injury. Since then, UFC CEO Dana White has consistently mentioned that Miocic intends to retire, though he has been less definitive about Jones’ future plans.
