Oleksandr Usyk suffers broken jaw in win over Tyson Fury
By Eddie Sanchez
Oleksandr Usyk emerged victorious against Tyson Fury in their 12-round bout on Saturday, but the win came at a cost. The newly crowned undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era was taken to the hospital post-fight to address a broken jaw.
Usyk’s absence from the scheduled post-fight press conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was notable. Promoter Frank Warren informed the media that Usyk had been rushed to the hospital due to a jaw injury sustained during the fight. This was unexpected, given that Usyk delivered the more powerful blows, especially in Round 9 when he knocked Fury down.
The fight, marking the first undisputed heavyweight title clash in 25 years, did not disappoint. The early rounds were closely contested, but Fury dominated the middle rounds with precise punches that hurt Usyk. The tide turned in Round 7, and Usyk gained the upper hand with a knockdown in Round 9, nearly finishing the previously undefeated champion. Usyk secured a thrilling split decision victory with scores of 115-112, 113-114, and 114-113.
