Jake Paul vs Tommy Fury: The Truth

By Eddie Sanchez

We are 72 hours away from witnessing the much-anticipated bout between Jake Paul (6-0, 4 KOs) and Tommy Fury (8-0, 4 KOs). The two men have largely made a name for themselves outside of the ring, with Paul dominating the social media scene and Fury starring in Love Island UK respectively, but many boxing fans will wander their eye towards the square circle to see just how well Paul fits in as an opponent.

Reality television fame aside, Fury of course is the younger brother of Tyson Fury, the Heavyweight Champion who will go down as one of the best in our current generation. Tommy Fury comes from a true fight family, and has trained for the majority of his life. Though the combines record of his past opponents stands at (30-176-5), Fury should have the skills and technical background necessary to win this fight with ease.

Despite that assumption, there is some momentum surrounding the belief that Jake Paul has shown compounded improvement over the years, and could have enough of the skills necessary to take advantage of Fury’s weaknesses, which include his suspect chin and punch telegraphing. The interest is enough that Paul is actually listed as the betting favorite at -195 according to the latest CBS Sports assessment of Caesars Sportsbook.

Though Paul has faced former MMA greats like Anderson Silva, Tyron Woodley and Ben Askren in the squared-circle, he has his eyes wandering towards other endeavors as well.

As reported by the DailyMail, Jake Paul is in advanced discussions to secure a two-fight deal with MMA legend Nate Diaz, which would include one in boxing and another under MMA rules. It’s assumed that if this deal is signed, the MMA fight would take place under the Professional Fighters League, considering his high profile contract agreement from earlier this year.

Potentially bridging Jake Paul’s planned career ark towards the Nate Diaz rivalry is a future bout with fellow YouTuber turned boxer KSI. “The kid KSI keeps on talking and says that in December, he wants to fight. I’m ready whenever,” Paul confirmed. “November, September, December, I don’t care. Whenever he wants to die, I’m cool with it. Whenever he wants to give me so much money, I’m cool with it. It’s going to be a bank robbery. So that’s my year, is one, two, three, finish up with KSI. But a lot of these guys are just talk, man.”

A fight with KSI would be a step down in competition, though would provide much excitement in the circles of their key demographic. Will Jake Paul’s three opponent plan come to fruition? A large portion of that question will be answered Sunday afternoon.
