Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Victor Ortiz Exhibition Boxing Fight Set for Aug. 24
By Eddie Sanchez
Retired boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. is reportedly set to announce an upcoming exhibition fight against Victor Ortiz.
According to ESPN’s Salvador RodrÃguez, the bout will take place on August 24 at Plaza de Toros Mexico in Mexico City, the largest bullring in the world, with a capacity of over 41,000 spectators.
Mayweather and Ortiz previously fought in an official match in September 2011, where Mayweather won by a fourth-round knockout.
At the time, Ortiz had a record of 29-2-2 and was coming off a WBC welterweight title victory over Andre Berto.
Meanwhile, Mayweather had been out of the ring for 16 months but made a significant impact by defeating Ortiz for the WBC welterweight title upon his return.
Mayweather retired with a perfect 50-0 record, but his victory over Ortiz remains one of his most controversial. After Ortiz delivered an illegal headbutt, the fighters were separated. Ortiz then hugged Mayweather in an apparent apology. As Ortiz released the hug, Mayweather landed an unexpected punch, causing Ortiz to look toward the referee. Mayweather then delivered another punch, resulting in a knockout.
Given the venue and the history between Mayweather and Ortiz, this exhibition fight could be one of the biggest events Mayweather has participated in since retiring from professional boxing.
