Canelo’s Next Fight: The Blockbuster vs Likely Route
By Eddie Sanchez
Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KO) made the fourth defense of his undisputed super middleweight title earlier this month with a masterful unanimous decision victory, handing Munguia (43-1) his first professional defeat.
With that fight behind him, fans are left to wonder what’s next for Alvarez.
The Blockbuster Idea:
Terence Crawford is universally recognized as one of the sport’s elite fighters, boasting a pristine 40-0 record with 31 KOs and championships in three weight classes, including undisputed status at both 140 and 147 pounds.
The popular Nebraskan is set to pursue greatness further with a bid for a fourth title at 154 pounds in early August. He has also expressed interest in a multi-weight climb to face Alvarez, a prospect that has supporters among knowledgeable observers.
“My opinion,” said lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson, “I already told y’all. I think that Bud outboxes the sh-t out of Canelo.”
This fight would need to take place in late 2024 given Crawford’s scheduled August bout. By then, Crawford will be a filled-out 154-pounder, just 14 pounds shy of Canelo’s 168-pound limit. Despite the weight difference, Crawford would have a significant reach advantage.
However, due to timing issues, this blockbuster matchup might have to wait until 2025.
The Likely Route:
Edgar Berlanga—due to his No. 1 WBA ranking, high-profile promotional connections, and lack of significant opposition—will be next in line for Canelo in September.
The 26-year-old Puerto Rican gained attention with a streak of 16 consecutive first-round KOs from 2016 to 2020. He has since extended his record to 22-0 but has only added one more KO, primarily defeating opponents considered to be of modest caliber.
In fact, none of his opponents are ranked among the WBA’s top-15 contenders. However, Berlanga was designated as the mandatory challenger for Alvarez after the previous mandatory, David Morrell Jr., announced his move to light heavyweight.
Berlanga is promoted by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom, which has collaborated with Canelo in the past and maintains a good relationship.
“It’s only a matter of time,” Hearn said after Berlanga’s win over Padraig McCrory in February. “Puerto Rico against Mexico. That will be a huge event.”
