Four Next Fights Canelo Should Take
By Eddie Sanchez
Canelo Alvarez, recovering from elbow surgery, is a non-champion in the sport of boxing. This is something that could not be said about the man since 2015. With 68 total fights in his career, a career that has officially surpassed 20 professional years, The Bad Promoter has constructed a four-fight blueprint to get the Mexican back on track by the end of 2027.
The Interim Title Fight
In May of this year, Armando Resendiz shocked the boxing world by winning the WBA Interim Super Middleweight title from Caleb Plant. He’s a dog, simple as that. He’s a throwback fighter who puts his head down and trades shots. This is the type of fighter that will bring some ferocity out of Canelo. This would also be a great re-entry post-recovery. This fight is perfect for mid-2026.
The London Fight
Canelo has long sought a fight in London. Chris Eubank Jr. has long been rumored to be a future Canelo opponent. Closing out 2026 with a fight against the two men would be a greta action packed fight for Canelo, and a stage like Wembly stadium would be a feather to put in his cap.
The Brother
A fight with Jermall Charlo was one Canelo should have on his resume already. Unfortunately, Charlo has suffered from mental health issues and was unable to commit to the fight. His twin brother took his place, and Canelo cruised to an easy victory. A fight between Canelo and Charlo would be a great name to add to Canelo’s resume. Staging this fight in Texas or New York would be excellent. Charlo has ties to Houston from his youth, Canelo has hosted fantastic events there, and New York is aplace Canelo has not fought a formidable opponent in since Rocky Fielding in 2018. This would be a great fight for mid-2027.
Nostalgia and Context
The fourth fight on the list is more for the story arc than anything else. It would add little to his resume, but would add context to the length of Canelo’s professional career. A fight against Shane Mosley Jr. in 2027 would be a spectacle, considering a young Canelo conquered Shane Mosley Sr. in 2012 (15 years prior). Including a father and son on his resume would be awesome, and a something boxing fans can enjoy from a narrative perspective.
What This Plan Would Mean
These fights are not those that point to a man seeking a legacy-defining moment for his career. Fortunately for Canelo, he has earned his legacy already, and he is truly free to fight whomever he wants. Resendiz offers a young Interim champion to get Canelo back to a competitive nature following his elbow surgery, Eubank Jr. offers Canelo a stage he’s long dreamed of, Charlo offers another undefeated Champion from his era, and Mosley Jr. offers context to the length of Canelo’s dominant career.
