Tyson Fury is Serious About a 2026 Comeback
By Eddie Sanchez
Tyson Fury appears ready to step back into the ring in short order. The former longtime heavyweight champion announced his latest retirement in January, shortly after suffering his second consecutive UD defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in December.
However, “The Gypsy King” (34-2-1, 24 KO) seems unable to stay away. According to his promoter Frank Warren, the 37-year-old plans to return in 2026.
“I spoke to him last week. He said that he’s going to come back and fight next year. He wants to do it,” Warren told DAZN.
“He’s had a very busy year. Although he hasn’t fought, he’s been filming his Netflix series At Home with the Furys and working on another documentary, along with other projects. He told me categorically he wants to fight next year, so we’ll sit down and see.”
The most likely and lucrative option for Fury would be a long-awaited showdown with fellow Brit and former two-time unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.
Joshua (28-4, 25 KO), who turns 36 next week, has not fought since September of last year, when he suffered a fifth-round KO loss to Daniel Dubois.
Both Fury and Joshua have expressed renewed interest in finally making their long-discussed fight happen before they retire.
Last week, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that he held positive discussions with Turki Alalshikh, the head of Riyadh Season, about potentially staging the bout.
“He wants to make AJ against Fury, that’s no secret,” Hearn said. “He wants to make the biggest fights in the sport, and that is the biggest fight in boxing right now. We’ve got to agree on our end, and then it’s up to Turki whether he can get Fury in the ring.”
With Joshua recovering from a May elbow surgery, a tune-up should be expected. There are plenty of heavyweights that he could take on, and given this reality, it would make sense for Fury to plan the same for himself. If 2026 ends with these two giants finally facing off, then the victor will be standing within arm’s distance of another title shot.
