Canelo Scheduled to Undergo Elbow Surgery Oct. 23
By Eddie Sanchez
Canelo Alvarez will undergo surgery to clean up loose particles in his left elbow on Oct. 23. The surgery will come in the wake of a unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford that cost the Mexican superstar the undisputed super middleweight title in their mega fight on Sept.13 before 70,482 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
This was a tough loss for Canelo at this stage of his career, as it left him without a championship in his corner for the first time in 7+ years. With a surgery on the docket and his career at a perceived crossroads, one can only wait for his next steps.
Will it be a rematch with Crawford? Or will he take on a long-rumored foe like Chris Eubank Jr.? Either option would be good for his bank account, but both have different implications for the future of his career.
A Crawford rematch so close after his surgery would indicate that he is cashing out, while a Eubank fight would signal that the Mexican (former) champion would like to take on yet another British fighter, a practice he is familiar with. Perhaps it could even be in London, what a comeback that would be.
For now, we must wait and see, and hope for a smooth recovery.
