There’s no trust between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia, and the Haney camp’s request for Garcia to enroll in Olympic-style drug testing, six months before a potential rematch, is a clear signal of what they expect for a second fight to happen.
Bill Haney, Devin’s father and trainer, gave Garcia a 48-hour window to sign up for Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) testing, shortly after Garcia expressed interest in a rematch. Garcia is currently serving a one-year doping suspension, set to end in April 2024, following a positive test for the banned substance Ostarine.
“We don’t duck fights or lawsuits. You’ve got 48 hours to enroll in VADA for the rematch,” Bill Haney posted on social media, challenging Garcia to commit to clean competition.
Garcia ignored the deadline, responding on social media: “You’d have to be dumb to think I’m listening to Bill Haney. They’re suing me. I don’t need them.”
Bill Haney replied that they respect their time and the sport, and will move on if Garcia can’t comply. Haney has expressed that drug testing is essential to ensure Garcia fights without any enhancements, referencing concerns from their first bout, which Garcia won by majority decision after knocking Haney down three times. Garcia later tested positive for Ostarine, leading the New York State Athletic Commission to declare the fight a no-contest.
The Haney team has no plans to engage in a rematch without strict conditions, while Devin Haney is also in talks for other potential fights, including with Teofimo Lopez and Liam Paro. Bill Haney noted that Devin could return to the ring before the year’s end if a fight materializes.4o
