Canelo vs Ryder is Official!

By Eddie Sanchez

Canelo Alvarez’s (58 – 2 – 2) much-anticipated return is officially set and promotion is underway for his date in the ring with John Ryder (32 – 5). In his 63rd professional fight, Canelo will defend his five Super Middleweight belts in his hometown of Guadalajara.

Hosting a fight in Mexico for the first time since 2011, Canelo is excited to give the fans a show at the Estadio Akron. This will be the first boxing event in the stadium’s thirteen year history.

The superstar will make his return to his homeland 4,180 days since he last stepped through the ropes in Mexico, when he stopped Kermit Cintron in Mexico City in five rounds to defend his WBO World Light-Middleweight title. This will also be his 35th professional bout in his home country.

John Ryder, the WBO Mandatory Challenger, will of course look to spoil the homecoming. The man known as ‘The Gorilla’ landed the WBO interim title in his last fight when Zach Parker retired on his stool after four rounds of their clash in London, England in November. That victory set up what will now be the biggest fight of his career.

Per Caesars, the opening odds have Canelo Alvarez listed as the -1200 favorite, with John Ryder listed as the +750 underdog respectively. The Brit will have an inch and half height and reach advantage against the Mexican. Come May 6, 2023, we will see if this plays a factor in the fight.
